Attract Talent, Save the World: The Employee and Sustainability

How your organization's ESG and sustainability initiatives attract top talent and keep employees engaged.

Attract Talent, Save the World: The Employee and Sustainability

A recent Gallup study reveals that one-third of job seekers believe “it is extremely important that their organization has a positive impact on communities.” A staggering 71%, meanwhile, take a company’s environmental record into account when considering employment options.

The stats don’t end there. The study not only shows that employees around the world are placing increased importance on any given company’s sustainability efforts – they’re also more likely to be more engaged, trustful, satisfied, and productive when working for an organization that they believe “makes a positive impact on people and the planet.”

These realizations have played a key role in spurring global organizations to incorporate sustainability and other ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) initiatives into both short- and long-term strategies. The development of such initiatives are not necessarily defensive, either; besides talent attraction, there are clear benefits to embedding ESG into business – cost-efficiency chief among them.

How sustainability benefits the employee

“Sustainability starts with organizations being good stewards of their own practices, resources, and stakeholders,” the study reads. “However, the true benefits of sustainability practices are realized only when they extend beyond organizational walls to affect society at large.”

When working for organizations that are sustainable – or for organizations which are actively taking strides to become more sustainable – increasingly socially conscious generations of the workforce are more:

  • Engaged. They care about what they are doing, and have a higher sense of mental well-being.
  • Trustful. They believe in company leadership – and are more willing to take part in upcoming initiatives or new ways of working.
  • Satisfied. They are less likely to seek other jobs (churn) – and more likely to recommend their company as a place to work.
  • Productive. They do more with their time, as they believe they are working for an organization that cares about creating a better future – and is taking action to do so.

How you can take action and attract talent

Sustainability efforts are fuelled by data. According to global consultancy EY, “improved ESG insight and data analytics could be important to delivering long-term value.” For 90% of surveyed investors, for example, “financially material ESG data” from corporates is important in strategy and decision-making processes. This data goes hand-in-hand with attracting top talent – it is proof of initiative and action. And it is equally important to potential employees as it is to investors.

Fortunately, workplace technology can help connect corporate sustainability efforts to employees, providing them with a sense of purpose for ESG, while collecting meaningful data that can fuel these initiatives.

The right workplace experience app will enable you to quickly and easily access this data, so you can make informed decisions about the way your office is used – whether it’s information regarding occupancy, lighting, or temperature.

At Office App, we provide clients with personalized data dashboards, which provide oversight into these factors and more – enabling you to make data-backed decisions regarding sustainability that serve as talent attractors, as well as result in long-term cost savings and increased ROI.

Other Office App features, such as those that allow employees to play a direct role in your office’s energy conservation efforts, enable them to directly control lighting and temperature levels. Another benefit of such features is an increase in smart capabilities, which make your office easier, more efficient, and more convenient for employees to use. This attracts talent, as well as increases overall employee engagement with your building’s additional features, resources, and amenities.
